This year, viewers can enter the world of Tom Clancy in a way they never have before. The first-ever animated series based on the late military thriller writer's work, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, is coming to Netflix.

While updating the rest of their animation slate, the streamer has announced that the series will premiere this fall. The series is based on Ubisoft's Splinter Cell video game franchise, which began in 2002 and centers around Fourth Echelon, a fictitious black-ops division of the National Security Agency. Led by Sam Fisher, Fourth Echelon is an elite strike team that emphasizes stealth above all else. The original Splinter Cell game is considered one of the greatest video games of all time, and has been followed by a number of sequels and tie-in novels . A film adaptation was in the works for many years: Tom Hardy was cast as Fisher, while Doug Liman was attached to direct, but the project ultimately fell apart, leaving the upcoming animated series as the first adaptation of the property. However, gamers will have to adjust to a new voice for Fisher: Michael Ironside, who has voiced the character since his inception, has retired from the role, leaving Liev Schreiber to take on the mantle. No other voice casting has been announced. The actor is no stranger to Clancy's work, having starred in the 2002 adaptation of The Sum of All Fears. Who Is Tom Clancy? Close Insurance agent Tom Clancy published his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, in 1984; a submarine thriller, it introduced Jack Ryan, who would become his most enduring character. The book was praised for its technical accuracy and thrilling plot, and got a huge sales boost when it was given a glowing review by then-US President Ronald Reagan. Clancy continued to put out novels at a rapid pace until his death from heart failure in 2013. The Hunt for Red October was adapted into a 1989 film starring Alec Baldwin as Ryan, with two sequels, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, following, with Harrison Ford as Ryan. The series was rebooted with Ben Affleck in 2002's The Sum of All Fears, then again in 2014 with Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and most recently in Prime Video's Jack Ryan TV series, which starred John Krasinski. His book Without Remorse, which centered around CIA operative John Clark, was adapted for the screen in 2021 with Michael B. Jordan in the lead: a sequel, Rainbow Six, is in the works. John Wick creator Derek Kolstad is the lead writer and executive producer of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. It will be directed by Guillaume Dousse and Félicien Colmet-Daage. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Deathwatch will be released this fall; no precise release date has yet been announced. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
