Ashley McLean was diagnosed with a fast growing and aggressive cancer.

A nurse has told how a cuddle from her young son saved her life. Ashley McLean saw her doctor after feeling an unusual pain in her breast while hugging three-year-old Noah.

"After I pulled on his T-shirt he tried to run away and accidentally elbowed me in the chest. I later noticed my breast was red and inflamed and my nipple was inverted. "It felt like we'd finally been turning a corner with Noah's health. Ayla was thriving and looking forward to starting school, and just as things seemed to be settling down, I was facing what doctors told me can be a fast growing and aggressive cancer.

And she inspired her best pal Nikki McPhilemy and 18 other friends to take part in the 10km Shine Night Walk in Glasgow on Saturday, in aid of Cancer Research UK. Nikki, friends from ­Holyrood Secondary School in Glasgow and hospital colleagues sounded the start horn in Ashley's honour. They formed Ash's Army and raised more than £5000. Nikki, 37, said: "Ashley is more like a sister than a best friend.
