A county police detective was in the area near the Bedford Station apartments when he heard gunshots and responded to the scene in the 1400 block of Kanawha Street about 5:30 p.m., according to Assistant Chief Vernon Hale. The detective found the wounded child and mother and attempted first aid until medics arrived, Hale said. The child was taken to Children’s National Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The mother was also taken to a hospital where she was treated for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening, Hale said.“This isn’t about snitching,” Hale said. “This is about justice for the victims. Someone in this community knows who did this.” Added Barry L. Stanton, deputy chief administrative officer for public safety and homeland security in Prince George’s: “This violence in this community has got to stop.
