The Army’s tri-motor Atlantic-Fokker C-2 mono plane, manned by Lieutenants Lester J. Maitland and Albert F. Hegenberger, takes off from Oakland, Calif., on its record-breaking flight to Honolulu, Hawaii, June 18, 1927. This stretch of the Earth’s surface has never been spanned by an airplane before.
