To spur conservation, California utility compares your energy use to your neighbors paid Oracle
Dan Rendler, SoCalGas's director of customer programs and assistance for the past six years, is also a customer—and that gives him an up-close view of the home energy reports the company sends.
SoCalGas energy use comparison reports have helped customers reduce natural gas usage by 10 million therms since the program began in 2013.Rendler believes similar conversations take place in many homes in SoCalGas’s coverage area, where more than 1,400,000 customers receive the monthly personalized energy use comparison.
For example, SoCalGas recently joined with Calgren Dairy Fuels in Pixley, California, to announce the completion of Calgren's dairy RNG facility where through a process called anerobic digestion, methane emissions, or biogas, are captured and converted to make renewable vehicle fuels. Producing pipeline-quality RNG that is injected into the SoCalGas pipeline system allows Calgren to supply RNG to existing compressed natural gas refueling facilities.
The project was inspired by SoCalGas’ desire to get its customers the information they need to become more active participants in managing their energy footprint. “Customers aren’t receiving generalized stuff—they’re getting information specific to their household and the way it operates,” says Scott Neuman, group vice president for Opower. The original reports started a gradual reduction in energy usage that has intensified in recent years.
Opower developed the home energy report as a way to deliver that message more cost-effectively than door hangers, while still achieving a measurable savings reduction. Customers in the SoCalGas program have saved up to 2% per year every year, adding up to huge impact over the past six years.
