When it comes to fake news, sharing is out of the question.
Provide a sufficiently descriptive prompt and the systems can produce a response that looks like it was created by a real person.
As this is one of the ways in which people are trained to identify fake accounts, the use of seemingly genuine AI-generated profiles has just made disinformation so much more difficult to stop. This approach was employed heavily by political manipulators who worked with the now infamous data consultancy firm, Cambridge Analytica, where they used millions of unethically acquired data points to understand the kinds of social media content that would either resonate with or alienate voters.
With more and more people turning to all forms of social media for their news and information consumption, this is where media literacy competency is necessary to equip them with the tools to protect them from such threats. Learning to be media literate is relatively easy. Each person should have a diverse list of websites and media organisations with opposing views that they consider to be a source of reliable and dependable information. Whenever you encounter new information, you should always check these sources to verify if it is true or not.
Media literacy education in Malaysia is not where it needs to be. There is only minimal mention of it in our school syllabi and while there are organisations that focus on teaching it, there is not enough support from the government and the general public in advocating this fundamental skill that everyone who uses the Internet must possess.
