Since its first expedition to the Titanic shipwreck in 2021, the Titan’s crew encountered problems aboard the submersible, including issues with its electrical system and battery, according to court documents. Follow our live coverage below.

The Titan submersible has various safety mechanisms to return it to the surface.A growing number of aircraft, ships and underwater equipment from the US, Canada and France have joined the search.

“The equipment that is onsite and coming is the most sophisticated in the world and certainly capable of reaching those depths,” said Sean Leet, chief executive of Canadian company Horizon Maritime.Contact The Titan was launched from an icebreaker that was hired by OceanGate and formerly operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The ship has ferried dozens of people and the submersible craft to the North Atlantic wreck site, where the Titan has made multiple dives.Experts say the best-case scenario would be finding the Titan on the ocean’s surface. It is equipped with safety systems to help it rise to the surface during an emergency even if everyone on board is unconscious.

Joyce Murray, Canada’s minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, echoed that sentiment. Officials said in a statement that they are dispatching a specialised salvage system that is capable of hoisting “large, bulky and heavy undersea objects such as aircraft or small vessels”.The Titan weighs 9 tonnes and the US Navy’s Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System is designed to lift up to three times that weight.

The issues during the first expedition were mostly electrical problems that were “solved as they came up,” according to the documents filed by OceanGate Expeditions, the undersea exploration company that commanded the Titan’s missions.Ultimately, 18 of the submersible’s crew members explored the Titanic wreck site for the first time in 2021, the filing stated.
