The Titanic was a passenger ship which sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton in the U.K. to New York in the U.S. Built in Belfast for the White Star Line company, the ship was a much heralded vessel at the time. The disaster drew worldwide attention after more than 1,500 passengers died.
A fascination for many, the Titanic has become a notable icon in modern history and popular culture, most famously depicted in the 1997 Hollywood blockbuster by James Cameron, which won 11 Academy Awards.
