Titanic is projected to take no. 1 at the box office this weekend and it would be the first re-release to do so in 25 years.
Titanic could very well become the first reissue to reach No. 1 in over 25 years. The film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, is still the third highest-grossing film of all time in the worldwide box office, though it will likely soon be surpassed by 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water as it continues to climb the charts. Through its combination of sweeping romance and disaster movie thrills, Titanic also won Best Picture and 10 other Oscars in addition to its commercial success.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Per IndieWire, Titanic is in contention to take No.1 at the domestic box office this weekend. All it will need in order to dominate the sleepy Super Bowl weekend is about $10 million. If it can accomplish this, it will become the first reissue to hit No. 1 since the Star Wars special editions back in 1997, the same year Titanic originally premiered.
There are two other strong contenders for the top spot this weekend. One of these is the surprise hit 80 for Brady, which has used a discounted ticket strategy to draw older audiences back into theaters. Although it didn't outgross Knock at the Cabin last weekend, the NFL-themed road trip comedy made a surprise grab for No. 2, knocking the Avatar sequel down to No. 3 for the first time in its run.
The other big competition for Titanic this weekend is the trilogy-capper Magic Mike's Last Dance. The film, which sees director Steven Soderbergh reteaming with star Channing Tatum, opened this weekend. While it will likely be a huge draw come Valentine's Day, it may not quite have the juice to draw audiences away from the Super Bowl on Sunday.
