Working on Fire has been teaching children and teachers how to keep safe this festive season.
While December is a time for celebrations, it’s also fire season in parts of the country. According to rainfall patterns, South Africa has two fire seasons a year: the dry summer months in the Western Cape, and the dry winter month in the rest of the country. JOHANNESBURG - Communities must know what to do in case of fire, according to Working on Fire director Trevor Abrahams."Of course, one side of the equation is preventative work that’s where the Work On Fire goes into communities, to schools, we also deal with educators and we give them fire awareness training in terms of what they can do to mitigate disaster," Abrahams said.
"We teach children in the schools by stop, drop and roll, if they do get caught in a fire. Some that’s some of the preventative work. "There are more technical preventative work is what we call fuel low reduction so we either get involved in doing fire breaks to limit the spreads of fire. Or we reduce fuel in a particular area of vegetation which is going."It’s important that you do burn regularly, it promotes new growth, it also removes the excessive growth.
