Plumbers say be sure not to let too much water run during freezing temperatures because water pressure could suffer.
NEW ORLEANS - With freezing temperatures forecast for the New Orleans area next week, homeowners are being warned to take precautions to prevent pipes from freezing.
Pete Graffeo, a master plumber and owner of Pete’s Plumbing and Heating, emphasized the importance of protecting pipes from the frigid conditions. Wrapping exposed pipes is one measure, but he also recommends letting water flow. “This is what you’re looking for where the water comes into the house,” LaVenia said while holding a pipe with a handle. “I always say motion is the lotion, that’s what keeps the pipes moving.”“The best thing, if you can do it, is to go to your water heater and turn it to a lower setting. Some have vacation modes; others let you adjust the temperature,” he explained. “You want the temperature down because you don’t want it constantly running while you’re letting water flow through your pipes.
“My meter is here, I have one of these way in the back of my house because you’re pulling the water through the main all the way to the back of the house for the drip,” she said.
