Firefighters were called to the village, along Wilshire Boulevard and Dowlen Drive, just after midnight and found several of the homes burning.
It's not clear what sparked the fire, which sent up large flames and plumes of smoke. No injuries were immediately reported.
Twelve of the 140 shelters were significantly damaged by the fire and are beyond repair, according to officials. VA social workers are contacting impacted veterans to assess their needs and help them find housing options.
