Tinder introduces 'Face Check', a facial recognition system to verify new users' identities and prevent fake accounts.
Popular dating app Tinder has implemented a new verification system that utilizes facial recognition technology to confirm the authenticity of users signing up for the platform. The system, known as Face Check , requires users to submit a short selfie video during the registration process. This video is then analyzed by Tinder 's algorithms to match against the user's profile picture, ensuring that the person creating the account is indeed a real individual.
This safety measure rolled out on Monday and is initially mandatory for users in California.Tinder's Vice President of Communications, Philip Price Fry, emphasized the company's commitment to fostering a secure and respectful environment for users. 'Creating a fun and respectful environment where Tinder users can be their true selves is our priority,' Fry told FOX Business. 'As part of our continued efforts, we are always testing ways to deliver the best experience for our users to seek authentic connections.'If the biometric face scan verifies the user's identity, a photo recognition badge will be displayed on their profile. Following the verification, the submitted selfie video is promptly deleted, with only two screenshots retained for security purposes. Tinder assures that Face Check prevents the creation of multiple accounts by the same individual. Notably, this verification process operates independently from Tinder's existing ID check, which relies on government-issued identification. Yoel Roth, Head of Trust and Safety at Tinder's parent company, Match Group, sees Face Check as a crucial safety net for users. 'We see this as one part of a set of identity assurance options that are available to users,' Roth stated to Axios. 'Face Check... is really meant to be about confirming that this person is a real, live person and not a bot or a spoofed account.'According to Axios, the program has demonstrated positive results in Colombia and Canada, leading to its implementation in California as the first U.S. state. Roth explained that California's selection was driven by its substantial population, diverse demographics, and robust online safety and privacy laws
