Veteran newsreader Tina Daheley announces her departure from BBC Radio 2's breakfast show, ending an 18-year career in early morning radio that spanned multiple BBC stations.
Tina Daheley, a long-time newsreader for BBC Radio 2's breakfast show, has announced her departure after nearly two decades presenting early morning slots for the corporation.
In an emotional on-air moment during Tuesday's show, hosted by stand-in presenter Gary Davies, she shared the news with listeners. Her exit comes just days before Sara Cox is set to become the new permanent host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show following the controversial sacking of Scott Mills in March. Breaking the news live, Tina expressed, "It's been a privilege to have had a whole generation of people grow up with me.
" Tina's journey in breakfast radio began in 2007 when she joined 1Xtra, describing reading the news on Trevor Nelson's Breakfast Show as her "dream job. " She later transitioned to Radio 1, spending a decade working alongside presenters like Chris Moyles and Nick Grimshaw. After Nick Grimshaw's departure, she vowed never to do another breakfast show, stating, "that's it, I'm done, I'm hanging up my breakfast show mic, I'm never doing a breakfast show again.
" However, when Zoe Ball invited her to join the Radio 2 Breakfast team in 2019, she accepted, later continuing to work with Scott Mills after he took over in 2025, calling him her "work husband. " Now, after 18 years of early starts, she told the team, "I think I deserve a lie in.
" In a detailed Instagram statement, Tina reflected on her career: "After more than 7 years of early alarm calls on Radio 2, I'm stepping away from Radio 2 Breakfast. It's been one of the greatest privileges of my life to wake up with you every morning, and humbling to have been trusted to deliver the news on the biggest breakfast show in Europe.
" She traced her path back to 1Xtra and Radio 1, noting she spent a decade broadcasting to a quarter of young people in the UK. "After 18 years and six back-to-back breakfast shows (probably a record in there somewhere), I'm looking forward to a lie-in. " She extended her best wishes to Sara Cox and her team, adding that her five-year-old daughter Athena is "so excited to have her mummy back.
" Tina also teased future projects, clarifying she is not leaving Radio 2 entirely: she will continue presenting between 12-2pm when Jeremy Vine is away and will appear on BBC One after the summer, urging followers to "watch this space. " Zoe Ball, who left Radio 2 last year, commented on Tina's post with affectionate support. The context of Tina's departure is intertwined with the recent turmoil at Radio 2.
Scott Mills was dismissed in March following historical allegations of "serious sexual offences" against a teenage boy under 16. Although police questioned him in 2018 and the Crown Prosecution Service rejected the case in 2019 due to insufficient evidence, the BBC acknowledged it had known about the allegations since 2017. Mills is now suing the BBC for unfair dismissal, with his legal team corresponding with the corporation.
Some of his allies believe he was made a "scapegoat" by the then director-general Tim Davie amid broader scandals involving Huw Edwards, Gregg Wallace, and Jermaine Jenas. Tina herself had previously described a "difficult" time during the aftermath of Mills' sacking. Sara Cox is scheduled to start her new role as breakfast show host next week, marking another significant change for the station
