Breaking: Timothy Simpkins found guilty of attempted murder for 2021 Timberview shooting
On Thursday, prosecutors said they had provided sufficient evidence to show Simpkins was guilty of attempted capital murder.“He was hunting [Selby] down, like a wounded animal,” prosecutor Rose Anna Salinas said. “[Selby] was crawling, and that wasn’t enough for him. You saw the video, that’s as cold-blooded as it can get.”
Prosecutor Lloyd Whelchel added that Simpkins taking the gun to the school in the first place, as well as how he used the weapon even when he knew other people were in the room, showed intent. He pulled out the gun to show the courtroom Thursday.Advertisement But defense attorneys said during their closing arguments that Simpkins did not wake up the morning of Oct. 6, 2021, with the intent of driving to Timberview High School to kill Selby or the other people who were injured.“What is a 17-year-old boy supposed to do when someone comes in and brutally beats him, brutally puts him into a fetal position?” defense attorney Lesa Pamplin said.Attorney MarQuetta Clayton played a video of the moments leading up to the shooting.
She said Simpkins faced “deadly weapons” he was protecting himself from during the fight — a bookshelf, a desk, a whiteboard, a fist, a foot and the ground.The jury will reconvene Friday morning to begin considering Simpkin’s punishment. He faces up to life in prison.
