Timothee Chalamet posing in front of a Marty Supreme step and repeat
This weekend, the awards season will start to reach the finish line, as The Actor Awards — formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild of America Awards — will hold the 32nd ceremony on Sunday, March 1.
This is one of the strongest precursors for the major acting categories, making it a place for current frontrunners to cement their positions before Oscar voting closes on March 5. As of now, predicted Oscar winners in the acting categories, like Jessie Buckley for Best Actress and Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor, are widely expected to take home wins at the Actor Awards. The latter is already a Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Awards winner for his performance in Marty Supreme, so an Actor Awards victory would likely solidify his first Academy Award win. While he's going to miss out on setting an Oscar record should he win there, a SAG win would put Chalamet in the history books, as he'll achieve something no one has ever done before. Timothée Chalamet Could Be The Actor Awards' First Back-To-Back Winner The thing is, Chalamet winning for Marty Supreme will not be his first Actor Awards victory. He already has a history of winning among his peers thanks to the recognition he received for A Complete Unknown. Should he win for Marty Supreme, he'll join the list of actors with multiple SAG wins: Daniel Day-Lewis, Frances McDormand, Renée Zellweger, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, Kate Winslet, and Mahershala Ali. However, Chalamet would be the first one to win at this ceremony in back-to-back years in the same category. Just as he won"Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role" for A Complete Unknown last year, he's nominated in that category again for Marty Supreme. Zellweger did go back-to-back at SAG by winning in 2002 and 2003, but her recognition came in different categories. Her 2002 win came in Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role" for Chicago. She then won in"Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role" for Cold Mountain the following year. Otherwise, nobody else had consecutive wins at SAG regardless of the category, much less in the same category. Chalamet's position as the frontrunner this awards season gives him a strong chance to be the first repeat category winner. Yet, his status as the frontrunner feels just slightly more at risk with this looming record. The actor's guild sometimes goes against the consensus view of awards season to honor veterans of the industry. It wouldn't be all that surprising, all things considered, if Leonardo DiCaprio or Ethan Hawke got the win. Hawke has never won here, and DiCaprio hasn't since 2015. But considering the momentum Timothée Chalalet has had all awards season, he's rightfully still the favorite to win at the 32nd Actor Awards this season and set this historic record.
