Less than a month after the opening of the transformative Sydney metro, authorities plan to cut peak hour services on key rail lines.

Changing rail timetables is invariably a fraught and thankless exercise for authorities. Train travellers in the main are such creatures of disciplined habit that any alteration to their daily schedules is often a major dislocation to their lives.

Our report that passenger train services will be cut by up to four an hour on two key rail lines during peak periods as part of a major shake-up of Sydney’s rail and bus timetable may make sense to infrastructure planners, but after months of turmoil commuters and other train travellers cannot be blamed for thinking it all seems very ad hoc, and they now must endure further reduced services.

For its part, Transport for NSW said it was still adjusting the public transport network to integrate the recently opened city section of the driverless M1 line into Sydney’s train and bus system.Indeed, the opening of the $21.6 billion metro rail line extending from the city’s northwest, under the harbour and through the Sydney CBD, to Sydenham was hailed as transformative.

What is the point of a metro if it means fewer trains on some lines? Authorities should better explain the necessity of such cuts instead of leaving train travellers wondering why one step forward now requires another step back.– Since the Herald was first published in 1831, the editorial team has believed it important to express a considered view on the issues of the day for readers, always putting the public interest first.
