Times Square demonstrators' rally to support Palestinians met with heavy NYPD presence
Demonstrators who gathered in Times Square for a rally in support of Palestinians were met with a heavy police presence Friday afternoon, just as New York City officials had promised the day before.
The demonstrators stood near a maroon SUV adorned with Palestinian flags and a banner urging people to “Stand with Palestinian resistance.” Vendors sold Palestinian flags for $5 a pop, while demonstrators handed out signs and tied their keffiyehs as they performed a sound check.“Free, free Palestine,” demonstrators chanted as the rally got underway.
A variety of pro-Palestinian groups organized a mass demonstration in Times Square, including Majlis Ash-Shura: Islamic Leadership Council of New York, an umbrella group that includes dozens of mosques and Muslim organizations.Kashif Choudry, of Brooklyn, said he attended the rally to “show solidarity with the people of Palestine.”
Loai Ajaj is Palestinian and has lived in New York City for 18 years. He attended the rally to support his friends and family in Gaza and the West Bank.
