REPRESENTING Malaysia is a privilege, not a burden.
This is the reminder sent by Academy Badminton Malaysia chief executive officer Michelle Chai to the national shuttlers, who did not live up to expectations at the just concluded Malaysian Open. The best performers from the Badminton Association of Malaysia were mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, who reached the quarter-finals before bowing out to Thailand’s 2021 world champions Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai.
In the women’s doubles, French Open champions and world No. 6 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Bulgarian sisters and world No. 14 Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva in the first round.“We know that Aaron-Wooi Yik and Pearly-Thinaah are capable of producing much better performances.
“The players should not be burdened by the pressure of representing the country and competing in the home tourney but instead should consider it a privilege,” said Michelle.“The likes of Aaron-Wooi Yik need to remember that they took up the sport because of their love for it. When they started playing badminton at the age of six or seven, they really enjoyed it.
Moving forward, Michelle wants all stakeholders to work together to achieve the target of winning the elusive gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
