The cold front was expected to reach northern suburbs like Lake Forest by 10:40 a.m., Evanston by 11:10 a.m. and Chicago by 11:30 a.m., according to the NWS. It'll be in Gary, Indiana, by around noon.The lake-enhanced cold front is rushing into Illinois, and will lead to a drastic temperature drop from the 60s down into the 40s. The timing of the front will impact how severe the incoming storms could be. "The front will stabilize the atmosphere in a good part of the area," NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Pete Sack said.Around 1 p.m., showers will start to move in, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, starting in counties to the far north and west. By 3 p.m., showers and storms are expected to move into Cook County, with rain and storms possible during theIt will peak between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., and move out by midnight.According to the Storm Prediction Center, areas further south of Chicago, including Kankakee County in Illinois and Newton and Jasper Counties in Indiana will be under an"enhanced risk" for severe storms, which ranks as level three of five. Meanwhile, Will, LaSalle, Grundy and parts of Cook County were under a"slight" risk of severe weather and areas to the north and west, are under a"marginal" risk of severe weather, or level one.While those areas were some of the hardest hit in the earlier March tornado wave, the threat with Thursday's storms will be centered largely on hail -- though the sizing won't be nearly as big the potentially record-breaking hailstones seen on March 10. "The threat for tornadoes today in our is MUCH lower than on March 10. The main threat is damaging hail," NWS reported. Still, damaging, golf ball-sized hail was possible, along with damaging winds and even a few tornadoes in southern portions of the Chicago area. "Additionally, the potential of repeated thunderstorms moving over the same areas south of the Kankakee River Valley late afternoon through evening may result in some localized flooding," the NWS warned. The forecast is on track for today. While a few storms may move across the area as early as 11 am to 12 PM, the main window continues to look like 3 to 11 PM this evening. The threat for tornadoes today in our is MUCH lower than on March 10. The main threat is damaging hail.The rest of the Chicago area will likely see a threat of rain and thunderstorms, though the risk of those storms becoming severe is much lower.Rain and storms were expected to be gone by midnight, Roman said, with dry conditions and temperatures dropping into the 40s Friday and into the 50s by the weekend.
