While the overarching theme of the day was tackling change, especially climate change, a thread of activism knit throughout each of the 12 panel discussions.
Singer and songwriter John Legend was the most explicit in his comments on “The Art of Impact.” During his time on stage, it was announced that Harry Belafonte had died at the age of 96. Legend said that while Belafonte sang about the islands, he was committed to integration and social justice and was a big supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“It was kind of early,” the Californian said, teasing about the three-hour time lag. “Everyone’s on board,” said the retired House speaker about the Democratic Party, who reminded those attending, and especially Ball, who authored a tome on Pelosi, that she was in leadership for “20 years.” Basketball stars Carmelo Anthony and WNBA champion and WNBA President Nneka Ogwumike said “sports and justice go hand in hand.”Anthony said he tries to convince colleagues to speak out. “You don’t have to stand on what I stand on, or deal with the issue that I have to deal with, but you gotta take care of your community first,” he said. “And everybody does that, then we’ll be OK.”
Noting that antisemitism incidents have risen the most in one year since the Anti-Defamation League began counting in 1979, director Steven Spielberg said his foundation is combatting it. He also admitted that he considers “E.T.” and “Schindler’s List” to be his best films. He said he disapproves editing out or changing scenes in old films to accommodate present-day concerns. They should reflect the times they were produced, he added.
