Tadej Pogacar single-handedly held off a full-scale offensive by Jonas Vingegaard's Jumbo-Visma team in the Pyrenees, but with many more mountain stages looming in the Tour de France, his UAE Emirates team might need to step it up if the Slovenian is to conquer a third title.
Pogacar, the 2020 and 2021 Tour champion, lost ground to defending champion Vingegaard in the Col de Marie Blanque on Wednesday, but he bounced back in style the day after on the ascent to Cauterets-Cambasque, dropping the Danish rider after coming under the Jumbo Visma team's fire in the Col du Tourmalet.
"At the start of the Tour, his team was stronger on paper, but then you have to manage them on a daily basis. Can you afford wasting energy every day or do you spare the guys a little bit?" Groupama-FDJ sports director Philippe Mauduit told Reuters. "He is a team mate de luxe. As long as they can keep him in the game in the general classification, he can be a danger ," said Mauduit, who guided Alberto Contador to two Vuelta titles and now manages Thibaut Pinot and podium contender David Gaudu.His counterpart at Jumbo Visma, Sepp Kuss, has been key to Vingegaard's success last year as well as in Primoz Roglic's victories with the Dutch team.

Time-refraction optics with single cycle modulationWe present an experimental study of optical time-refraction caused by time-interfaces as short as a single optical cycle. Specifically, we study the propagation of a probe pulse through a sample undergoing a large refractive index change induced by an intense modulator pulse. In these systems, increasing the refractive index abruptly leads to time-refraction where the spectrum of all the waves propagating in the medium is red-shifted, and subsequently blue-shifted when the refractive index relaxes back to its original value. We observe these phenomena in the single-cycle regime. Moreover, by shortening the temporal width of the modulator to ∼5–6 fs, we observe that the rise time of the red-shift associated with time-refraction is proportionally shorter. The experiments are carried out in transparent conducting oxides acting as epsilon-near-zero materials. These observations raise multiple questions on the fundamental physics occurring within such ultrashort time frames, and open the way for experimenting with photonic time-crystals, generated by periodic ultrafast changes to the refractive index, in the near future.
