As France battled to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, Mauny's salon, in Mayenne, about 270 km west of Paris, had to close under a government order that allowed only food stores, tobacconists and pharmacies to keep trading. “I'm going to cut hair, I'm going to welcome people,” he said, just after opening. “Wow, I really want to.”

Most stores re-opening yesterday kept to regular business hours. Not Mauny. “I like to be first,” he said.
