CHICAGO — In a typical party convention, the home state delegations of the presidential and vice presidential nominees can usually be assured of prime seats — conspicuous placement that ensures friendly faces and reliable support for the candidates on stage. That’s true in 2024 for the California delegation cheering on native daughter Kamala Harris but not Tim Walz’s Minnesota delegation, a reality driven by electoral politics and the unusual nature of the abrupt shift in the Democratic ticket.
In 2016, Bernie Sanders brought in a much more sizable pool of delegates who made their voice — and dissatisfaction with Hillary Clinton’s nomination — known throughout the Philadelphia convention. “We’re obviously a big tent party. We embrace the fact that there’s a lot of people with a wide diversity of views on all sorts of topics. We don’t run away from that,” Alex Hornbrook, the Democratic National Convention executive director, said in an interview.
