Sen. Tim Scott said the"radical left" is using Jewish citizens and students to"hold on to their political power" when asked about the wave of antisemitism in the nation.
“I am shocked and disappointed by the radical left and the liberals who are so focused on their power that they will use any issue, any group, including our Jewish citizens and Jewish students, to hold on to their political power,” Scott said on Fox News on Wednesday evening when asked about the display of anti-Semitism in America while showing footage from pro-Palestinian student walkouts that took place last week at universities across New York City.
Hundreds of activists and students at Columbia University gathered in front of the steps of Low Library, holding signs that read “Stop bombing Gaza” and “Ceasefire now” on Oct. 25, which Fox News displayed while Scott spoke. A string of pro-Palestine demonstrations have occurred across the nation, with demonstrators demanding a ceasefire in the densely-populated enclave of Gaza, where civilians have been caught in the crossfire between Israel and Hamas.
Two weeks ago, the GOP presidential hopeful introduced legislation banning federal student aid to colleges and universities that promote events with an antisemitic message. The Stop Antisemitism on College Campuses Act would bar schools like Columbia and other colleges from being eligible for Title IV funds, which includes federal student aid.Scott also suggested foreign students protesting at American universities against Israel should be deported.
“I say we, those of us who are not Jews, should stand in the gap for our Jewish American citizens,” Scott said. “We should stand in the gap for our students on college campuses who are Jewish as well.”
