Tim Allen is bringing another comedy icon to his ABC sitcom 'Shifting Gears'. This time, he's reuniting with fellow comedian Jay Leno, who will make a guest appearance as himself in an upcoming episode. Leno's cameo is a nod to his real-life expertise in custom hot rods, attracting a clientele of Hollywood's elite. Allen and Leno previously worked together on 'Last Man Standing', showcasing their comedic chemistry. 'Shifting Gears', meanwhile, focuses on widowed father Matt (Allen) and his estranged daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), as they navigate their complex relationship while running a classic car restoration shop.
Tim Allen is reuniting with another comedy legend on his ABC sitcom Shifting Gears, this time welcoming Jay Leno to the classic car repair shop. Leno, 74, will make a guest appearance as himself in an upcoming episode airing on Wednesday, March 12th. Allen, 71, exclusively told Us Weekly that Leno's cameo came about because 'the guy is able to make custom hot rods in Hollywood .' 'So there's a lot of profile people in Hollywood that like cars.
They'll be popping in and out and there'll be other elements of other shows.' This isn't the first time Allen and Leno have shared the screen. They both worked together on multiple seasons of Last Man Standing. Allen is no stranger to sitcoms, having previously played Tim 'The Toolman' Taylor on ABC's Home Improvement from 1991 to 1999. He then went on to star in Last Man Standing for nine seasons as Mike. Shifting Gears, meanwhile, centers around widowed father Matt (Allen) and his estranged daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), who are forced to live together and work on mending their relationship. The series also stars Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis. Jenna Elfman has been cast as a recurring character, playing spirited choreographer Eve Drake, who owns a dance studio across from Allen's classic car restoration shop. Last month, Us exclusively revealed that Shifting Gears would also feature a reunion between Allen and Nancy Travis, who previously played Allen's onscreen wife on Last Man Standing. Allen initially struggled with the decision to return to traditional television after starring in Disney+'s Santa Claus series. 'It was a complicated decision,' he told Us last month. 'I was doing Disney+'s Santa Claus series at the time and I said, 'I really can't think about this now.'' He was concerned about the impact of streaming on television, stating, 'I was so depressed at how streaming has hurt television.' However, his experience in the comedy world eventually led him to reconsider. 'I've done Mike Baxter and Tim Taylor ,' he noted. 'So if I do this again, I pitched three things: I want a guy that lost his wife recently, so he's dealing with grief; I want a guy with the family that doesn't get along; And then he has a custom car shop.' Allen was eager to explore a new character with Matt. 'He's more like me. I'm more of an artist. I was a design student and a philosopher and my standup comedy is really about messing with people in a good way,' he added. 'I came from a huge family run by women. So my perspective is very different about men. I don't think we run things. So I want this to be that guy. He's not a ‘man's man’ in that term, and he wasn't trying to be anything but what he does.
