While TikTok claims it"deploys a combination of policies, technology, and moderation strategies to address problematic content or accounts," the nature of its algorithms makes it difficult to curb abuse.
This wariness of self-regulation has driven some users on TikTok and other platforms to vigilantism as an alternative to platform-established channels, like reporting accounts or flagging posts. There are also multiple people keeping"watchdog" accounts on TikTok, and some have resorted toSimilar networks of users have popped up on other social platforms — like Instagram and YouTube — to call attention to accounts that have approached them inappropriately or victimized younger users.
Collaborative efforts among users to police platforms suggest a deep level of commitment to platforms, but they're not a tenable situation for content moderation issues. The strong desire to protect platform experiences underscores the sense of ownership some users feel over social media spaces, such that their ability to create and connect with others is worth fighting for.
