A new lawsuit alleges that TikTok was aware of instances where minors on TikTok Live were exposed to inappropriate messages from adults and that the company profited from these interactions through its virtual gifting system.
According to the lawsuit, an internal review by TikTok called 'Project Meramec' revealed that hundreds of thousands of children were circumventing age restrictions and engaging in live streams with adults. The lawsuit claims TikTok's algorithm promotes live streams with gift exchanges, potentially amplifying the reach of these exploitative interactions. The lawsuit further alleges that criminals were using TikTok Live to sell drugs and run fraudulent operations. TikTok, in response, denies the allegations, stating that the lawsuit misrepresents its efforts to protect community safety. The company emphasizes its robust safety measures, including screen time limits for teen accounts, Family Pairing tools, strict live streaming requirements, and ongoing enforcement of its Community Guidelines.
