Nearly a week after being pulled from the Apple and Google app stores due to the US' ban-or-divest law, TikTok remains unavailable. While the platform briefly returned online, it hasn't made its way back to either store. Apple and Google risk billions in fines for reinstating the app, and the situation remains unclear due to President Trump's executive order. Marvel Snap, another ByteDance app, is expected to return to app stores as early as next week.
Nearly a week after its removal, the TikTok app remains absent from both Apple and Google 's app stores . The app's disappearance followed the implementation of the US' ban-or-divest law last weekend, which led to the service becoming inaccessible within the United States. While TikTok briefly regained online functionality shortly after the ban, it failed to return to either mobile platform.
Apple and Google face the potential of hefty billions in fines if they reinstate TikTok's availability, and the uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump's executive order, which seemingly suspends the ban, adds further ambiguity to the situation. Apple and Google have yet to respond to multiple requests for comment from The Verge, including inquiries made today, regarding the app's potential return. Both companies issued statements regarding the removal of TikTok and other ByteDance-owned applications like Lemon8 and Marvel Snap, but have remained silent since. TikTok itself did not immediately provide a response to a request for comment. However, Marvel Snap's developer, Second Dinner, issued a statement on Friday evening via X, stating, 'Our current estimation is that Marvel Snap will be back in the app stores as early as next week barring any setbacks.' Without elaborating, Second Dinner co-founder Ben Brode responded to a question on Bluesky regarding updates for next month, saying, 'we're hoping to have it back before then.' The absence of these apps from primary software distribution channels effectively prevents new installations without resorting to cumbersome workarounds. It also hinders the delivery of crucial updates encompassing new features and bug fixes, including potential security vulnerabilities. Existing TikTok users who had the app installed prior to the ban can continue using it uninterrupted. (Consequently, individuals are attempting to capitalize on this by selling used phones with TikTok pre-installed.) Alternatively, TikTok can be accessed via a web browser, including on mobile devices
