The Detroit Tigers defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-0 behind Tarik Skubal's dominant pitching and a powerful early offensive eruption that included a Spencer Torkelson two-homer game. Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez was tagged for six runs in the first two innings, and the Angels' offense could not solve Skubal or mount a comeback.
The Detroit Tigers decisively defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-0 on Saturday night at Angel Stadium, handing the slumping Angels their fourth consecutive loss. One day after a painful ninth-inning defeat, the Angels were unable to recover from a disastrous start by pitcher Grayson Rodriguez, who was charged with six early runs.
Offensively, the Angels were stymied by Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, who delivered a dominant seven-inning performance. The loss drops the Angels to a league-worst 38-61 record, while the Tigers secured a convincing victory in the series. Tigers' offense erupted from the very first pitch against Rodriguez. Kevin McGonigle led off with a double, followed by Dillon Dingler being hit by a pitch and Colt Keith's RBI single, putting the Tigers up 1-0 before an out was recorded.
Spencer Torkelson then hit a three-run homer, extending the lead to 4-0 just five batters into the game. In the second inning, the Tigers continued the assault. The first three batters reached base via singles and a hit batter. With the bases loaded and no outs, Keith and Riley Greene each hit sacrifice flies, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Rodriguez managed to stabilize and hold the Tigers scoreless for the next two innings, finishing with a line of four innings, seven hits, six runs, one walk and three strikeouts, his ERA rising to 8.23. The Angels' bullpen could not prevent further damage. Brent Suter entered in the fifth and immediately gave up Torkelson's second home run, a 420-foot blast to center field, extending the deficit to 7-0.
Meanwhile, Skubal was nearly unhittable. The two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only five hits, no walks, and striking out nine batters on an efficient 87 pitches. The Angels' only significant threat came in the sixth inning when singles by Logan O'Hoppe and Mike Trout put runners on first and second with one out. Skubal escaped by inducing a weak grounder from Vaughn Grissom that resulted in an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
In the eighth, the Angels loaded the bases against reliever Jacob Waguespack with two outs, but Grissom lined out to center field to end the final scoring chance. The Angels have now lost 12 of their last 14 games, deepening their struggles as the season continues
