Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, citing that he is not yet ready to compete. This marks a setback for Woods, who had recently committed to playing in the tournament, which would have been his first PGA Tour appearance since July.
Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, citing his unsuitability to compete. This decision comes just days after Woods announced his intention to participate in the tournament, marking his first PGA Tour start since the British Open in July. Woods was scheduled to play 18 holes in competition for the first time since undergoing a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate leg pain.
This would have been his sixth lower back surgery and his first competition since the passing of his mother, Kultida Woods, at the age of 80 last week. Woods, the tournament host, moved the event from Riviera Country Club due to devastating wildfires in the surrounding Los Angeles community of Pacific Palisades. While he has never won at Riviera, Woods boasts eight victories at Torrey Pines, including the 2008 U.S. Open. The public course, situated along the Pacific Ocean, also witnessed his last top-10 finish on the PGA Tour, a tie for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2020. The Genesis Invitational, a limited-field signature event with no cut, would have seen Woods playing four rounds in a tournament for the first time since last year's Masters, where he extended his record for consecutive cuts made to 24. However, he finished last among those who made the cut at the Masters, shooting 82-77 over the weekend. Woods played in the other three major championships last year, missing the cut each time. As a 15-time major champion, the 49-year-old Woods holds 82 PGA Tour victories, tied with Sam Snead for the most ever. His last win was the Zozo Championship in 2019. He missed the entire 2021 season following a rollover car crash in Los Angeles in February 2021, which resulted in severe injuries to his lower right leg. Woods skipped the unofficial event he hosts in December, the Hero World Challenge, but participated in an exhibition with his son, Charlie, and competed in the indoor TGL league
