Flirting with the cut line at the PGA Championship late on Friday afternoon, Tiger Woods’ 5-iron approach from 210 yards on the par-4 16th at Southern Hills hopped onto the green, settled 4 feet from the hole and set up an easy birdie attempt for the 15-time major champion.Woods made the putt and with it helped secure a spot on the weekend in the year’s second major. He finished with a 1-under 69 and is 3-over through two rounds, a dozen shots back of leader Will Zalatoris.
Making his first start since the Masters in April and a day after admitting that his surgically repaired right leg was not as strong as he would like to be, Woods managed four birdies and made fewer mistakes than in the opening round, though he again looked hobbled. He also found himself scrambling after his tee shot on the par-3 11th went long and left. Woods made a mess of the hole and went on to make double bogey, putting him on the wrong side of the cut line.
Two holes later, Woods bounced back, though, with a birdie on the par-5 13th, before adding another three holes later to advance to the final two rounds.
