If the PGA Tour's best players have their way, the tour will become more 'star heavy,' which is good for fans, sponsors and TV networks
The long overdue proposal is a win-win for top players and golf fans, who would rather watch Spieth and Rahm compete down the stretch than No. 90 J.J. Spaun and No. 96 Troy Merritt.
The proposed series of top-tier events, perhaps as many as 18, would feature reduced fields filled by the top 60 players, plus a combination of exempt players and weekly qualifiers from the other events on tour. The tour already has granted elevated status to seven events, including the Memorial Tournament, which will see its purse jump from $12 million to $20 million next year.
“It seems strange right now that no one really knows what’s going on,” said Korn Ferry rookie Pierceson Coody, who ranks 21st entering the NCHC, the second of three finals events that award PGA Tour cards to the 25 players with the most cumulative playoff points. “It all sounds very weird. It’s not the tour we’ve all grown up knowing.”
