Main St., Salt Lake City.

The musical, the first by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, combines two classic Greek tales: Orpheus and his bride Eurydice, and the underworld king Hades and his wife Persephone. Hermes, the messenger of the gods, acts as narrator. Mitchell developed the musical with its director, Rachel Chavkin. It’s the first Broadway musical in a decade written by a sole woman, and the fourth time that’s happened in Broadway history.

“Hadestown” won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical and awards for Mitchell’s score, Chavkin’s direction and the supporting performance by stage legend André de Shields as Hermes. The Broadway cast recording won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. Tickets will go on sale online at broadway-at-the-eccles.com or arttix.org, or by phone at 801-355-ARTS.
