is full of twists and turns, so it was perhaps no surprise that its star, Mia Goth, chose her words carefully when explaining the film, in which she plays the title character. “Pearl is a young woman who’s quite naïve,” she told Deadline’s TIFF Studio. “She’s got a lot of ambitions, and as we follow her through this film we see her trying to make the best of a really difficult situation.”
Set in 1918, at the end of WWI and at the height of the last global pandemic, the film is a prequel to West’s summer release, in which a group of ’70s filmmakers descend on a rural farm, where Pearl and her husband live, to make a porno. “It came together in a strange way,” West said. “We were heading down to New Zealand to make, because it was at the peak of Covid and New Zealand was a safe place to make a film.
Instead, they chose to focus on one of Goth’s two roles in the movie: the crazy old lady Pearl. “We had been talking about her character’s backstory a lot,” said West, “because we don’t get a lot of that in the film. And that became interesting — like, if we went backwards and we did her ‘origin story’, for lack of a better term, there was an interesting story there to tell.”
