'They will deport you': Award-winning South African actress Thuso Mbedu took a jab at America following the Springboks' World Cup victory.
South African-born actress Thuso Mbedu took a swipe at the United States of America following the Springboks’ victory over the All Blacks on Saturday, 28 October.
The SA rugby team etched their names into the annals of rugby history by becoming the first team to ever win the coveted Webb Ellis Cup four times. This is after the Bokke beat the All Blacks 12-11 at Stade de France in the World Cup final.Like a large number of South Africans, including Mbedu – who is based in the US – expressed pride in captain Siya Kolisi and the team for defending their title.
“World Champions=Playing different countries and coming out on top. For example: South Africa are the Rugby World Champions,” theThe award-winning actress’ tweet was in reference to an ongoing social media debate between America and the World. The debate was sparked by US sprinter Noah Lyles in August this year after winning a gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. The athlete ruffled many feathers when he discussed his frustration with pro athletes in his home country, including those in the NBA, claiming the title of world champions.Lyles said it didn’t make sense for the winner of the NBA Finals, for example, to be labeled the “world champions” despite the league being based almost exclusively in the United States.
“I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have world champion on their heads. World champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong. I love the U.S. at times. But that ain’t the world…. We are the world. We have almost every country out here fighting and thriving and putting on a flag to show that they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA.”NBA stars including Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and even musician Drake tour into Lyle’s statement.
