Thursday night’s Democratic presidential primary debate drew 18.1 million viewers, far outstripping the audience of Wednesday’s initial debate

The previous record for a Democratic primary debate—15.8 million viewers—was set in October 2015, when a lineup of five candidates including former party nominee Hillary Clinton and current candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders participated in the first Democratic debate of the 2016 election cycle. In the night’s most heated exchange, Ms. Harris questioned Mr. Biden’s record on issues of race, pointing to his past relationship with segregationist senators and his opposition during the 1970s to federally ordered busing to integrate schools. Mr. Biden, who has pitched himself as an experienced successor to former President Obama, said the California senator mischaracterized his position.
