Forecasts call for a “marginal risk of severe weather today” in the Harrisburg area, with thunderstorms expected early this evening.

Published: Sep. 23, 2025, 4:56 p.m.National Weather Service in State College has issues a Hazardous Weather OutlookThe alert was issued for Adams, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Schuylkill, Snyder and York counties, with a prediction of “scattered thunderstorms with a risk of locally damaging winds” this afternoon and evening.

The alert continued through next Monday, though “the probability for widespread hazardous weather is low.” The forecast for tonight includes “showers and thunderstorms likely before 10 p.m., then a slight chance of showers between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.” “This afternoon, Tuesday afternoon, looks like there could be a couple rounds of storms before seven o’clock tonight,” said John Banghoff, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College. “After the sun goes down, they should pretty much die off.” Total precipitation is expected to be less than a tenth of an inch, except for “higher amounts possible in thunderstorms,” according to the National Weather Service forecast.there is a “marginal risk of severe weather today” in the Harrisburg area, with thunderstorms expected early this evening, followed by “cloudy skies after midnight.” “Storms may contain strong gusty winds,” The Weather Channel forecast reads, noting a 60% chance of rain for the area.“Most of tomorrow looks fairly dry,” Banghoff said. “By tomorrow afternoon or evening, again, expect a chance for some showers, but not really much of a severe thunderstorm threat for Wednesday afternoon.”“The first pass in the morning, probably just some torrential rain,” he said. “And then later on in the evening, we could have some stronger thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and perhaps some hail as well.”, and that “gusty wind small hail” may accompany the storms. A chance of showers will linger in our area throughout much of the week, but the weather is expected to clear up by Sunday.“We’ve had quite a deficit of rain over the last several months,” he said. “Really, since mid-July, deficits are running three to five inches across Southeast Pennsylvania, and that has led to the onset of much drier conditions.” Ideally, the rain will help fight the risk of wildfires in our region - especially after last year’s wildfire season was record-setting, Banghoff said. “Rain has been hard to come by,” he said. “So we’re hoping that as we head into the fall, we’re going to get a little more of an active pattern, with some wetting rains to mitigate the risk for wildfire spread this fall.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
