Sentry grabs and looks at Bucky Barnes' vibranium arm in Thunderbolts
Whether it's on-screen or on the page, Marvel has always thrived on its connectivity. From cosmic gods to more grounded vigilantes, the idea that so many different kinds of heroes and villains all share the same world is a massive part of the appeal.
However, sometimes it's arguably good to have limits, particularly for the MCU. Robert"Bob" Reynolds is a prime example. Also known as both The Sentry and the much darker Void, Bob recently made his MCU debut last year in Thunderbolts* played by Lewis Pullman. Now, this week sees Marvel Comics' release of a brand-new Sentry series, though the new preview for The Sentry #1 reveals an encounter that probably shouldn't ever happen on-screen. Marvel's New Sentry Series Teases A Showdown Between Bob...and Kingpin?? Based on the first few preview pages for The Sentry #1 by Paul Jenkins and Christian Rosados, the new four-issue Marvel series is already shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Marvel launches in recent memory. Right off the bat, this first issue adds a brand-new layer to Bob's already troubled origins, revealing that The Sentry's inner darkness as The Void first began via childhood trauma when Bob learned the story of Laika, the real-world Soviet space dog who was sent up into space and died due to overheating and no return plan. However, we then see Bob under the sway of The Void descending into the streets and back alleys of New York. While Bob strives to be a hero as The Sentry, the sinister Void seeks to undo Sentry's heroism with far darker acts. Keeping that in mind, the fact that the preview ends with the Void facing Wilson Fisk does not bode well for The Kingpin...at all. Effortlessly launching two of Fisk’s men into the cold vacuum of space, the Void claims he"just wants to talk" to Kingpin. It’s an incredibly tense and brutal sequence, while completely redefining what a “street-level” threat looks like in the Marvel Universe when someone like the Void suddenly enters the picture. The Sentry #1 Proves Certain Encounters May Never Happen In The MCU In the MCU, there have been recent discussions about whether New York-set movies like Thunderbolts* should cross over with more street-level stories like Daredevil: Born Again, and vice versa. After all, wouldn't the Thunderbolts/New Avengers be helpful in the current situation we're seeing in Daredevil: Born Again where Wilson Fisk's Kingpin is now New York's mayor and has declared war on all vigilantes? However, it's been made clear that there are some intentional limits . Marvel Studios has said that while certain street-level characters might show up in movies like Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home or Punisher in this year's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, street-level stories would largely be more contained from bigger-screen narratives/characters. All things considered, this new Sentry preview makes it pretty clear why some of these MCU limits exist. Seeing Kingpin standing just feet away from the Void is almost surreal, as Wilson Fisk has never looked more helpless despite typically being one of the most intimidating villains in New York. For all his power and influence as a major crime boss, what's Fisk going to do against someone like the Void? It's fascinating to see on the page, and one definitely wonders how the full issue will resolve this new encounter without Kingpin being thrown into space himself . At the same time, it makes perfect sense why the MCU is being more cautious about keeping certain characters and stories more separate. From an on-screen narrative standpoint, it's far easier to put someone like The Punisher into the new Spider-Man movie, rather than put someone like The Sentry into Daredevil: Born Again, at least not without severely undermining the stakes.
