It looked like another dark day for the Wallabies after a shocking first half. But then came a spirited comeback.
A thrilling second-half fightback by the Wallabies couldn’t overcome the damage done in a calamitous opening 25 minutes at Accor Stadium, with New Zealand hanging on for 31-28 victory.
But after New Zealand had several more tries disallowed after half-time, the Wallabies finally woke up, reduced the endless mistakes of the first half and staged a fightback. The Wallabies were left to rue the self-inflicted damage of the first half, when the All Blacks gratefully gobbled up the field position and attacking opportunities gifted to them.New Zealand, coming off two straight losses, will rue the fact they couldn’t put the Wallabies away, particularly with several botched chances in the second half. But they’d done enough in the opening half to get away with the win.
Rieko Ioane scored a second for the All Blacks in the eighth minute when an aimless box kick wasn’t chased, and the Kiwis found numbers on the left edge all too easily. In the 24th minute, another attempt to counter-attack from the Wallabies half backfired when Hunter Paisami tried to push on a silly pass, and Sevu Reece snaffled it and raced away upfield. He found Ardie Savea untouched in support, who scored the All Blacks’ fourth try.
There was no change of record when the second half resumed. A handful of successive penalties saw the All Blacks waltz down field and pocket another easy three points.
