Keith White, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New Braunfels, said that La Niña should give way after three years to more neutral conditions that will produce weather that is closer to normal for the area.
A fourth year of La Niña would be"unprecedented," White said. "There are 85 percent odds of entering a neutral pattern, when there is no Niña or Niño conditions, as temperatures in the Pacific are normal for this time of year," White said.Normal temperatures are expected through the spring and into the summer, but odds are El Niño will become the dominant weather pattern in the winter, according to White. Possible El Niño conditions next year are expected to bring colder temperatures later this year into 2024.There is a 62 percent chance of El Niño developing later this year, White said. During the El Niño weather pattern, warmer waters lead to wetter and cooler conditions, unlike La Niña, which produces drier and warmer weather, spurred on by cooler temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean. "The atmosphere is highly impacted, and as such, the jet stream in the late fall, winter, into early spring moves further to the north, meaning warmer conditions than normal in La Niña," White said."Under El Niño, that jet stream sets up further south, bringing the storm track over Texas."
