“Hot zero-day summer” is no joke. Security teams have been losing sleep dealing with supply chain attacks enabled by zero-day vulnerabilities—those unknown security gaps in software that even the developers don’t know exist—and the problem is getting worse. It demands a structural, more proactive response—a positive security model., a higher total than all of 2022, and the scope of the attacks has gotten broader.

Meanwhile, zero-day vulnerabilities are tricky to spot. That’s because most security products can only detect known vulnerabilities and scan for threats using signatures and machine learning models to identify and block malicious software. However, these approaches cannot detect zero-day vulnerabilities precisely because they have never been seen before.

In modern enterprises, visibility is often the biggest shortcoming for maintaining a strong security posture and defending against zero-day attacks. This is because enterprise applications typically share servers and databases across public cloud, on-premises infrastructure, and private cloud environments. In many cases, these applications are being stood up and changed frequently, which creates a breeding ground for vulnerabilities and attackers to thrive undetected.

Cybercriminals and ransomware gangs don’t take vacations, and neither should a security program. But with a positive security model in place, when the next zero-day is disclosed, there's a much better chance an organization's security team won't have to cancel theirs.
