Three players on 49ers’ roster fringe with a shot at making the final 53

Coach Kyle Shanahan and G.M. John Lynch would never come out and say it, but they’ve got a pretty good idea which players will comprise the 53-man roster when the season opens on Sept. 11 on the road against the Chicago Bears.

Here are three players who have caught the 49ers’ attention and have a shot at the 53-man roster on cutdown day based on their performance in a 17-7 road win over the Minnesota Vikings Saturday night:The truth about preseason rushing stats is this — the leading rusher usually gets cut. Mason led the 49ers with 57 yards on nine carries, ahead of third-round pick Ty Davis-Price, who had 41 yards on 10 attempts.

Davis-Price has shown enough to stick and his status as a third-round pick assures him a roster spot as a power back.“We struggled to get a lot going in the run game consistently,” Shanahan said. “It was nice to be able to run out the clock in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter.” Shanahan said Sermon has been battling an ankle injury and was encouraged that he made it on the field to play.

Hudson joined the 49ers practice squad on Sept. 3 of last season and was promoted to the active roster Jan. 1. After perennial Pro Bowler George Kittle, the 49ers have Ross Dwelley, Charlie Woerner, Tyler Kroft and Troy Fumagali in addition to Hudson.
