One person was burnt to death, another shot dead by police after a gang of criminals gunned a family's husband down and an attempted hijacking during a house robbery in Comet.
According to information gathered, about five men ambushed the family as they had just alighted from their car and were making their way into the house. It was at that point that the criminals shot him, and thereupon abandoned their kidnapping and hijacking missions. They fired shots as they were at the gate, fleeing the crime scene.Residents burn suspect aliveThey tracked down two men believed to be involved in the attack.
One suspect managed to break free from the crowd and tried to escape. However, a group of residents who gave chase caught him not far from the sports grounds. He was beaten and stoned. However, a police statement, seen by the Advertiser, suggests that the officer, armed with an R5 rifle, opened fire after someone in the crowd pointed a firearm at him.Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed the directorate was investigating the police conduct.The suspect who survived the mob justice attack was not placed under police guard in hospital, as he was apparently not deemed a suspect by the police.
