A trial is underway in New York City for three men accused of murder in connection with a series of fatal overdoses outside Manhattan nightclubs in 2022. Prosecutors allege that the defendants, Jayqwan Hamilton, Robert DeMaio, and Jacob Barroso, orchestrated a drug and robbery scheme targeting individuals leaving bars and nightclubs. The victims, according to the prosecution, were incapacitated by drugs laced with fentanyl before their wallets and phones were stolen.

The suspects then used the stolen credit cards and banking information to make unauthorized purchases, including sneakers, and fraudulent money transfers. Two victims, 23-year-old Julio Ramirez and 33-year-old John Umberger, tragically lost their lives as a result of the drug-laced substances. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office asserts that the defendants' actions directly led to these deaths. Outside the courtroom, the families of the victims expressed their unwavering determination to see justice served. Carlos Ramirez, Julio's brother, stated, 'We'll continue to be here. My mom, my dad, as difficult as it is, we're going to continue to be here.' Linda Clary, John Umberger's mother, shared her profound grief and desire for some remorse from the defendants. 'I would like to see that they have some remorse or exhibit some sense of remorse. And I keep looking for that and don't see it,' she said. The trial commenced on Wednesday with opening statements presented to the jury. Four witnesses were called to the stand by the prosecution. Linda Clary, John Umberger's mother, is expected to testify at a later stage in the proceedings. The case continues to unfold, with the prosecution seeking to prove the defendants' guilt beyond a reasonable doubt
