Three former Nebraska Cornhuskers football players and a future assistant coach will be participating in Super Bowl LIX on February 9th. Both the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs advanced to the NFL's biggest stage after winning their respective conference championships.
The Eagles roster includes two former Husker offensive linemen and a practice squad pass rusher, while the Chiefs' Terry Bradden is set to take over as NU's defensive line coach, succeeding Terrance Knighton who departed in 2020. Nebraska has had a representative in the last four Super Bowls, though teams featuring a Husker have gone 0-4 in the championship game. The Big Red contingent in Super Bowl LIX is led by Eagles center Cam Jurgens, a first-year starter who replaced All-Pro Jason Kelce following Kelce's retirement. Jurgens began the 2023-24 season as a starter on the offensive line before shifting back to center this season. During the NFC Championship game, Jurgens played through a back injury to help propel the Eagles past the Washington Commanders in a 55-23 victory on Sunday. CBS Sports noted that starting left tackle Landon Dickerson moved from left guard to center to temporarily replace Jurgens, but Dickerson left the game at halftime due to a knee injury. Jurgens, despite not practicing all week, bravely played 25 snaps in the second half. Even with Jurgens' limited participation, the Eagles maintained their offensive momentum, scoring touchdowns on four of their six second-half possessions and rushing for 128 yards. Philadelphia averaged nearly eight yards per carry in the final 30 minutes of the game. Joining Jurgens on the Eagles' offensive line as the NFC's representative in the Super Bowl is backup guard Nick Gates. Gates has yet to appear in a postseason contest for Philadelphia but played in nine games this season, including the Week 18 regular-season finale. Gates and Jurgens narrowly missed playing together during their time with the Huskers, as Gates' tenure ended in 2017 after opting out of his senior season to enter the NFL. Jurgens joined the program in 2018 as a freshman tight end from Beatrice and later transitioned to center after his first season in Lincoln. Former Husker pass rusher Ochaun Mathis is also a member of the Eagles' practice squad. Mathis has recorded two tackles this season with one forced fumble and saw action in three games for the New England Patriots before being picked up by the Eagles. The Chiefs do not currently have a Nebraska football player on their roster, but future defensive line coach Terry Bradden remains as an assistant defensive line coach with Kansas City until their season concludes. Bradden will wrap up his eighth season in Kansas City and his fourth in his current role. During Bradden's time in Kansas City, the Chiefs have won three Super Bowl titles, including back-to-back championships in the past two seasons. The Philadelphia/Kansas City rematch is set for Sunday, February 9th, from the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans
