RIO DE JANEIRO — Three orthopedic physicians were shot and killed early Thursday morning at a beachside kiosk in an upscale part of town in what authorities are calling a targeted execution that may have been politically motivated.
Also killed were Marcos de Andrade Corsato, 62, an orthopedic physician at Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo, considered the largest hospital in Latin America, and Perseu Ribeiro Almeida, 33, who specialized in foot and ankle surgery. “With the possibility of this being related to two federal congress members, I’ve called upon the federal police to analyze the investigation of the execution of the doctors in Rio,” Justice Minister Flavio Dino said Thursday morning.The killings occurred in the oceanside neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca, a wealthy area of town with a line of oceanside apartment buildings and luxury hotels.

Security camera footage obtained by local newspaper O Globo showed a group of black-clad gunmen emerging from a car and running up to their beachside table in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood and opening fire. Local press reported that the men were in town from Sao Paulo for an international orthopedics conference. The dead men included the brother of federal lawmaker Sâmia Bomfim. The fourth doctor was wounded and brought to a hospital, according to a statement from Rio’s military police.
