A Saturday night shooting outside a popular waterfront restaurant in Southport left three people dead and several others injured, according to local officials.
First-degree murder, three countsAccording to ChyAnn Ketchum, public information officer for the City of Southport, a boat approached the restaurant's dock and a suspect on board opened fire into a crowd before fleeing north up the waterway.
Three people were confirmed dead, authorities said. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin. Officials also said "multiple people" were transported to local hospitals with injuries., a City of Southport spokesperson confirmed three people were killed and at least eight were injured in the shooting. WWAY-TV also reported that the Town of Oak Island sent an email at 10 p.m. Saturday, shortly after the shooting. The email said the US Coast Guard saw someone matching the shooter’s description loading their boat at the public boat ramp at NE 55th Street in Oak Island. By early Sunday morning, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring confirmed that a person of interest was being questioned at a secondary location in Oak Island. In a statement, the City of Southport assured the public that "there is currently no known further credible threat" and that additional law enforcement personnel remain in the area to maintain safety.Emergency responders from multiple agencies—including the Southport Police Department, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives —quickly responded to the Saturday shooting.Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting. More information is expected to be released as the investigation develops.
