A shooting incident in Northeast Washington, D.C., left three police officers injured and a suspect dead. The suspect fired at officers during an attempted arrest, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

An early Monday morning shooting at a Northeast D.C. apartment building left three officers injured and a suspect dead, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). MPD Chief Pamela Smith said the incident began around 4:38 a.m., when officers responded to reports of a man with a gun firing shots inside the lobby of a building in the 300 block of Florida Avenue, NE. When officers arrived, they made contact with the suspect, who then ran into an elevator, authorities said.

Smith said additional officers were called to the scene to assist. A few minutes later, the man exited the elevator and encountered officers in the lobby. As officers attempted to take him into custody, the suspect produced a firearm and fired at the officers. Officials said the officers returned fire, striking the suspect. During the exchange, three officers sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby hospitals. MPD Chief said all three officers are in stable condition.The suspect was also shot during the incident but police said he died on the scene.'What I will say is this is yet another reminder of the daily dangers that we face every day in our city and across the U.S,' the chief said. 'I'm very grateful that our officers were able to get through this particular incident without any further injuries.' DC Police Union posted to X stating their officers 'are receiving treatment from the incredible doctors and nurses on staff.
