The protests began in the morning on LA's historic Olvera Street, dating back to Spanish and Mexican rule, before marching to City Hall. By the afternoon, marchers had occupied all lanes of U.S. 101, causing traffic to back up in both directions and on surface streets.
Demonstrators sat down in the lanes, while a line of California Highway Patrol officers remained nearby. It took over five hours for the freeway to fully reopen, according to CHP Lt. Matt Gutierrez.In the city of Riverside, hundreds also participated in the protests, waving flags at an intersection and receiving support from passing motorists who honked and cheered. Authorities in Dallas reported that approximately 1,600 people joined the demonstrations there
